Do you like Neon Genesis Evangelion?

The early episodes were a little too typical of the mecha genre for my tastes, but when they introduced Asuka in episode 8, I think the anime really came into its own, plot-wise. The animation is clear and crisp, and a new sheen of professionalism really gave the anime a big boost. Hideaki Anno’s been compared to Osamu Tezuka, but I think Anno has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In episode 16, the anime takes a completely serious turn, replacing what normally would have been fanservice with scenes of emotional trauma. I think the undisputed masterpiece of the series is episode 26, an episode so confusing, most people probably don’t watch it. But they should, because it’s not just one possible conclusion to the anime, it’s also a personal statement about Anno’s own depression!

Is Buying Call of Duty a Moral Choice?

If you play video games, you’ve shot a gun. And those guns are REALISTIC. So real that many are actually LICENSED by IRL arms dealers. Which means that when you buy a video game, you’re also putting money in the pockets of those gun manufacturers. That’s fine and dandy if you’re a fan of guns, but if you are someone who considers themselves anti-gun, this creates quite the moral quandary.

“One only has to spend a term trying to teach college literature to realize that the quickest way to kill an author’s vitality for potential readers is to present that author ahead of time as “great” or “classic.” Because then the author becomes for the students like medicine or vegetables, something the authorities have declared “good for them” that they “ought to like,” at which point the students’ nictitating membranes come down, and everyone just goes through the requisite motions of criticism and paper-writing without feeling one real or relevant thing. It’s like removing all oxygen from the room before trying to start a fire.”
